Alex, leader of Orientis, has divided his people, casting out many to love on the island of Aquila. This includes Maya, his own mother. In the wake of a murder, the two communities are brought together and Maya returns. In fear, Alex is driven to new extremes and a forbidden boundary is drawn through the water. Yet Alex’s daughter Elin has fallen in love with Korimako from Aquila and in a quest to be reunited with him and her grandmother, she attempts the dangerous journey. From what follows, unrest spirals and the conscience of the people and their leader is forced to the surface.

The opera is brought to life by a multi-genre score composed by Howard Moody and includes elements of classical, world and jazz music. The chorus of around 80 local auditioned singers were an active, shaping force of the drama, expressing the emotional effects of separation and political divide. Their music was woven together and led by five professional singers, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the OAE’s Ann and Peter Law Experience scheme who played alongside local young talented instrumentalists.
