The YAMawards has been recognising excellence in live music productions for young audiences since 2008. Brought to you by JM International, these unique awards celebrate the highly creative individuals behind the magic. We checked in with three YAMawards 2022 winners to find out what taking part in the YAMawards has mean’t to them.

Leanne Nicholls (Hong Kong) of Wild (The Musical)

Winner of the Public Choice Award 2022

“We were absolutely thrilled and honoured!” beamed Leanne when asked about winning the award for Public Choice Award 2022. For the collective, being recognised internationally for creativity for young audiences is affirming, “our performers and supporters are very proud of it! We feel we are going in the right direction and ALSO in a special and new direction!” said Leanne. “The award has opened up new creative doors and has given us the opportunity to connect with highly creative performers and producers from around the world. For me personally, it was the first time to be surrounded with like-minded people who do what I do - and who have the same goals.”

David Chocron (Norway) from Nobellum & the Sound of Climate

Winner of the Best Digital Production 2022

David is a multi (YAM)award winning producer and was present in Bruges, on behalf of winning Norwegian production Nobellum. In his eyes, the most significant achievement of the YAMawards, is that it has allowed him to call Nobellum an "award-winning" production! “It seems everyone in the world except me was an award-winning this or that. Now I am too!” he states with a chuckle and a smile. He says its success has broadened his possibilities of collaborations, and he has now been invited to work in Iceland, France, and possibly even Denmark. Moreover, he is working on his own lecture called “Connecting the Dots”, which is about how storytelling narratives can be applied to any art form, and hopes to share it with the YAM community in the near future.

    Ása Briem (Iceland) of Upbeat

Winner of the Best Participatory Project 2022

Ása, is the project manager the Upbeat, winner of the Best Participatory Project Award at the YAMawards 2022 in Bruges. “It was such a great honour for the project to receive this recognition and for us a valuable testimony of quality, but first and foremost, we are all so proud of the wonderful children who are at the core of the project”. Ása tells that the YAMawards opened up doors for the project to perform live at new places and stages, including a concert performance in Hong Kong: “The City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong chose four compositions from the Upbeat archive to perform at their „CHILL“ concert in December 2022, which was a great honour.” For her, participating in the YAMawards was an opportunity to present their project to a valuable community and create connections with colleagues in this field. “New compositional ideas have been pouring in,” says Ása about their plans for 2023, “and we look forward to seeing them develop and grow to be performed by professional musicians in Harpa Concert Hall.”

All three YAMawards winners full heartedly encourage productions and producers to apply for the YAMawards 2023. “It opens up new creative doors. The international connections are inspiring,” stated Leanne. The awards present high standard productions, and winning could mean new global connections and the opportunity to share work with a great community. “You get the opportunity to see other projects from around the world and learn from them,” Ása affirms. “If you are producing for young people,” David says, “it would be a shame not to share your work with the YAMawards community and perhaps even get a little recognition for your efforts. Who knows, you might even become an "award-winning" production!”

So, to all you amazing music makers out there, don’t hesitate to apply for the YAMawards 2023 before May 15th, 23:59 CET.
